I contacted a former student who works for a Ford dealer and he said to suspect a wiring problem, specifically corroded connector terminals. There may be repair kits available. Replacing an entire harness is extremely expensive and time-consuming. He said they're seeing a lot of connector problems on all Ford products because the connector bodies are not as weather-tight as they need to be.
Also, the Body Computer, Instrument cluster, and Transmission Control Module are all involved with vehicle communications and can cause shifting problems. The place to start is by reading and recording the diagnostic fault codes in each of those three computers. Those will indicate the circuit that needs further diagnosis.
