I took my car to the dealership to replace the timing belt as my mechanic said I should since he said he can, but typically doesn't handle more time consuming procedures like that. I asked him later if there are any area mechanics he could recommend that may handle time consuming jobs since he anyone doesn't handle that one. I figured it would be cheaper in the future than going to the dealership all the time. Would asking my mechanic to recommend another mechanic be insulting?

What is the best way to research mechanics? I don't know how to confirm qualifications and work ethic, and online reviews at least for one guy I looked up weren't very consistent.

I have never done that nor know how to. I guess if there is someplace like better business bureau see about complaints which with vehicles will always be some. And see a bout maybe a site like mechanics online etc. Again I have no idea it was normally word of mouth was best.
