Dear Sir

My name is Stephen Fenech from Malta, I was searching trough the internet and found your site. I know you arent going to benefit anything for the time to discuss my problem, but I would be very grateful if you will give me a suggestion. My Wife and I have bought a Toyota Vitz japan imports last April from a local dealer and and last week a sound in the transmission has developed. At first I thought that we picked something from the road and stuck with the tyre as the sound was like something from the Tyre( like when you catch a bag or something) after I have went to my mechanic, he told me that it is from the transmission and that an automatic transmission cannot be fixed or it is very unlikely to be fixed. He told me that it is better to buy another transmission, when I have checked the prices, I found that these costs from 900 euros to 1000 euros. I dont know if it is worthed to try to fix it or purchase another transmission? The dealer told me that the guarantee covers only the engine not the transmission !

Thanks a lot for your time

Hey there Stephen,

IF your mechanic is including the cost of labor in that 1,000 Euros, it's worth it. I'm looking at the transmission for the US version of your car and the supplier wants about $800 US. Most shops will charge you about 4-5 hours to swap out a transmission. At at least $100US per hour, you're ahead of the game with that price, IF he quoted for labor.

He did bend the truth with you though: Automatic transmissions can be fixed, although it isn't easy and takes a specific skillset to do. Most mechanics will either send them out to specialists to work on or swap.
