Idle speed has been computer-controlled for the last 25 - 30 years. When the air conditioning turns on it puts an extra load on the engine. The Engine Computer will pulse the idle speed motor, (it's not really an electric motor), to keep the idle speed at the specified value. Engine idle speed should hold steady. It should not increase when the air conditioning turns on and it should not decrease when you shift into drive or reverse.
