Check engine light.

I recently purchased a used car only 70,000 kilos. Sebring the check engine light has come on and remains on and once in awhile as im driving at a steady speed I feel the car***** forward as if im jumping on the gas or something and then it is fine, it does not do this all the time but once in awhile. Help!
