Starter now clunking?

The vehicle listed above is n54 335i. The starter now ‘chunks’. Second replacement starter was doing the same as original. No engine turnover. Battery at 12.2 on multi meter. Was using an Innova remote starter switch during walnut blast on p2nd intake port. Engine needs turnover, as well t went to ‘chunk’. Will have it on charger overnight.

Let me clarify my situation.I was walnut blasting and I was on my second cylinder using a remote starter (Innova) and it was going fine. Then it just quit advancing the engine, stopped open/close valves. Made a clunking sound. Thought it was a starter went out and bought a new one put it in - no improvement. I’m really at a loss, it’s as though something is stuck in the engine somewhere that will not allow the turnover. Help!

Yep, that is what it sounds like I would use a breaker bar on the front of the engine (balancer) to see if you can crank it over by hand.

This guide may help as well:

I removed fan, put on breaker bar and it will turn, maybe an 1/8th of a turn. I’m starting to think the cylinder head is packed with walnut blasting media. How do I go about cleaning it out?

Yep, good call. The only way I can think of is to remove the spark plug and use a small tube with compressed air to help blow the debris from the cylinder.

Hey guys, I got a couple videos here to give you some updates on my progress with my head removal and my walnut blasting clean out and I got a few videos. I’m going to send you let me know if you got any tips for me along the way, particularly how to handle heads that have the valves in them and the cam and the rockers and the rollers in it.

Four videos. I know they’re a little long. But I’m not a YouTuber, just some guy at home. Trying to get this done. Thankful to be able to share with someone who can appreciate it. LOL.

Nice work, thanks for the videos. It looks like the walnut blasting caused the problem; can I ask what problem you were dealing with to do the walnut blasting? Carbon?

Sludge. Covered up carbon buildup it was so thick I couldn’t see if the valves were closing all the way, thus that leading to the string of events I ran into. The before pictures were so dark you couldn’t really tell anything. I’ve got a couple after pictures that I just took today. I spent another 10 -15 minutes per cylinder once I got the head off.

I decided to take one more pass through the intake valves open them up shot the walnut chills through it as you could see the bucket there’s some pretty big chunks of carbon/sludge so doing with the valves open is probably the best situation if you’re in the position where the heads already off.

You are not kidding! Nice working cleaning the engine/head out the engine should run much better once reassembled. Thanks for the video, make sure to change the oil once the job is complete. :)
