There is a safety mechanism that rewuired you to step on the brake pedal in most cases in order to take the car out of park and put it into gear. They either use a cable or a plate and cable. Look near the brake pedal for a plate or cable that leads towards the shifter. It is interlocked into the sterter switch for safety as well and will not release the key unless it is fully in park and the button is released. If the plate and /or cable seem to be moving, remove the console cover by taking out the trim screw. Then gently pull on the pieces as they probably have body plugs that require a slight tug to pull the panels off. Then you can see the machanism working when you press the brake pedal and see if it is properly working at the shifter. You will also be able to see the mechanism involved when you press the button which allows it to pass by a bar or post and it may be sticknig on that. It eithere has an electrical contact or a mechanical contact when it is in the fully released position. Look for anything that is impeding movement or making it sticky such as an old spilled soda or anything sticky. Clean it off and/or tug on the mechanism by hand if possible to see if you can free it up.
