My Mazda is noisy (mechanical clank) during start-up after it sets a few hours or more - the oil pressure light stays on for about 2 seconds - then everything is fine. If I let the car set for less time, it starts up with no oil pressure light and no noise.

I am pretty sure that the pump should be replaced - what should I expect for cost?

What weight oil are you using? Are you using a anti flow back oil filter?

Using what the manufacturer recommends (5W-20 I believe) and yes, it is an anti flow-back filter.

I have to be honest, I don't know if a new pump will take care of the issue. However, I would expect the pump to be around 100.00 and labor to take nearly 8 hours. Please confirm that the oil filter has the anti-flow back valve. If by chance it doesn't, it could be taking the pump a few seconds to refill the filter before oil gets to the engine.
