If the security is the problem, the light should stay on. There is a chance that there was damage to the EVAP system. Check that and also make sure there are good body grounds. As far as cycling the key to get codes, you need a scanner. If your check engine light is on, get the computer scanned to find trouble codes. Many parts stores will lend or rent a scanner to you.
