The temperature gauge came on in my 2005 Lincoln Aviator, it went back down but then there was a burning smell, why?

Good question. Was the smell electrical? Did it smell like coolant? If the temp gauge went up to hot, something electrical may have melted under the hood. Check for damage to electrical wires, wire looms, cooling fan motors... Also, if it was a coolant smell, when the engine is cold, check coolant level and for leaks.
