Intermittent engine knock. Sounds like the piston is hitting. What is confusing me is the intermittent part of it. Engine will be running fine then all of a sudden it sounds like a diesel on steroids. The past 2 days it has gotten worse and more sustained. There is no loss of power. Just put in new plugs tonight. No help there. Added Sea Foam additive to the crank case. No help. Again this isn't a "click" like a dead lifter but a definite knock.

If there is no engine performance change, then it isn't a lifter. Are you certain that the noise comes from the engine? Is there anything that causes it to happen or go away? Is the oil clean and full? Does the oil pressure gauge ever fluctuate?

No, it's totally random. It does it cold or hot. Oil is fine. Let it sit today after changing the plugs for about an hour or so. Cranked it up and the knock was there. Don't know how old you are but if you can remember the days before unleaded gas, it KIND of sounds like an engine made for leaded buffer that someone put unleaded gas in. Maybe a little harder. It's definitely just one piston if it's a piston knocking. But for the life of me I have never heard of a RANDOM piston knocking. It is definitely engine related and it's something in the top end for sure.
