Recently purchased this vehicle after having it checked out by my mechanic. On a recent 500 mile round trip the engine started missing under load for awhile, then cleared up and ran fine. On the return trip power seemed low. At the end of the journey I had to stop at a red light. The oil pressure light came on at idle. I eased home the last mile with diesel-like clatter from the valve train at low rpm's. Immediately checked the oil and nothing on the dipstick. Drained oil (about a quart left) and it was black and sludgy. Refilled with Mobil 1 synthetic and filter.
Kept watch on oil and it dropped a quart in 50 miles around town. After research I had the PCV, hose and oil collector replaced. Number 3 cylinder had a very carbony and oily plug. Number 4 cylinder wasn't real good either. Replaced plugs with irridium NGK.
Still using oil and the oil is already darkish. Down a quart in 100 miles around town. Now I've put a quart Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase and soaked #'s 3&4 cylinders overnight with MMO thinking stuck rings. Could this be coil related or is it likely rings?

Driving with clatter sound is not a good thing. I doubt it tis a ring problem but more likely a blown piston or cam problem along with bearings. Inn otherwords a motor overhaul i'd bet. Pull the valve cover and look for cam damage if none you are very lucky but i'd suspect piston problem.S

Thanks for the info. I know that I have slim chances of "luck" with this engine. It does continue to run quiet now but could you tell me how hard it would be to swap a 2010 Duratec 25 from a wrecked escape into this 2005? Would I need to swap the ECM and Harness? Will the mounts and bell housing match up from the 2010 auto AWD to my 2005 manual FWD?

You have to use the sensors and computer from the escape first so everything has to hook up. And if one is rwd and the other is fwd it won't work because starter is on wrong side.

One last freebie guys. Thanks so much for you patience and assistance! Is there any difference between the FWD and AWD 2.3L Duratec engines used in the 2005-2006 Escape/Mariner/Tribute?
