My 2004 Volkswagen Passat Station Wagon (V6 2.8L 5-speed Manual) has a fun, new trick where it will drive fine for a little bit (granted, it's pretty hot outside), and then die at a stoplight or stop sign. If I let it cool down for about an hour or so, it will start right up again like nothing ever happened (though the check engine light has since come on). I ran the codes on it, and in addition to a few ignition misfire codes, P0322 popped up. In researching that particular code, however, it brings up both faults with the Crankshaft Position Sensor and the Engine Speed Sensor. Are these synonymous, or are they different? My mechanic wants to fix the Engine Speed Sensor (for approximately $250), but if it's actually the Crankshaft (should they be different), I'd prefer to address the actual problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Often faulty crank angle sensors shut down when they over heat and come good when they cool, I have actually had this with a Hyundai, and to prove the point to a customer when it shut down, I asked then to pour a little cool water over the sensor, and it started up straight away, check the CKP sensor first.
