I have a 2004 JETTA TDI. Getting some front end work done. The mechanic took it for a ride and said I should get Transmission serviced (fluid/filter etc.). I was reading on the internet that this is not required its a sealed unit. Is this true and was the mechanic just taking me for a ride. Please reply

"Sealed" means they cut corners by leaving off the dip stick tube so you can't check the fluid level or add fluid. Tough luck if you have slow leak. Special equipment is needed to pump fluid in.

Parts still wear. Varnish still forms. Additives still wear out. And regular maintenance is still required, only now it's no longer a do-it-yourself, simple project. It requires a trip to the dealer or repair shop with the necessary equipment.
