Why did my airbox explode when I bumped started my Beetle convertible?

The battery was flat and we bumped off the car in reverse. There was a loud bang and smoke poured out of the bonnet. On inpection the airbox had been damaged and the battery cover. I had to buy new parts and battery which came to £283

If you tried to start with a poor battery the injectors will still inject fuel and poor coil voltage will not ignite the mixture, with the booster battery you have had a massive inlet back fire, this is the unburnt fuel laying in the manifold and igniting, I would say this has caused your damage, under normal running conditions this will not happen.
