When I back out of my driveway there is a popping sound coming from the rear suspension. It also tends to do it when I turn right but also rarely does it when I turn left. I have read that it may be the metal shims between the leafsprings or that it could be the shocks. Maybe the bushings in the leafsprings? The noise is starting to get really annoying.

Have the steering and suspension systems inspected at a tire and alignment shop. Ford has more trouble with worn parts separating leading to loss of control and crashes than most other manufacturers, so noises are nothing to be ignored. In the rear the potential causes aren't as serious, but anything that allows the wheels to move around can reduce your ability to control the vehicle.

There is a tool you might be able to borrow or rent from an auto parts store that borrows them called the "Chassis Ear". It is a set of six microphones, a switch box, and headphones. You clip the microphones to suspect points, then drive around while listening with the headphones. You can move the microphones around to zero in on the source of the noise. Be aware that many mechanics have never seen or even heard of this tool. Suspension and alignment mechanics use it to find rattles, squeaks, and other noises.
