Things don't work right. Do an internet search for "GM instrument cluster repair" and you'll see it's a real big money-maker for GM. They will list all of the typical symptoms. If you're having a problem, you'll find it listed there already. I used Advanced Auto Electronics recently and got very fast service at a lower cost than expected.
