engine runs hot

my pickup started running hot, the temp. gage shows 250 and the computer shows "coolant hot"
also, when i turn on the heater it puts out cool air.

When the truck cools down, check the coolant level, if it is low, top it off with some water and have the cooling system and the radiator cap pressure tested for possible leakage, start here.
