Second question regarding the same problem, engine died while driving.

In doing some reading, I see that it may be the cam or crank sensor. Will a diagnostic tool for American cars be sufficient, or must I have additional software?

A quality scan tool will have built in software to read most cars, they will have a menu of cars and systems that the individual scanned can read.
