I don't actually have the 4 wd but I have winter drive - I was on a hill heading out onto a main thoroughfare when I was began spinning in ice/snow. I put in low & when I hit dry asphalt, my check engine light came on. It stayed on & next day mechanic came by & said his code reader said catalytic converter & he wanted $2800 - this seems outrageous to me & another mechanic told me I was getting screwed - I have not done anything to it yet & the light has not come back on. This is a V6

That is crazy. You can get a universal catalytic converter for under 100.00. As far as the problem, if the vehicle is running good and the light isn't on, drive it. If the light comes back on, have the computer scanned and ask them for the trouble code. Get back to us so we can determine what set the code. Also, a bad converter will usually cause a power loss.
