2003 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.7L. Thermostat stuck in closed position, top and bottom radiator hoses were sucked flat. Engine overheated. Replaced both hoses, thermostat, radiator cap. Runs, but a serious noise coming from engine. Doesn't sound like when a rod bearing goes bad, but I am wondering if the water pump was seriously damaged. Won't drive it for fear of more damage. I am preparing to remove everything to get at the pump and inspect the timing belt as well. Thoughts, anyone?

try to pinpoint the sound you are hearing and manually check oil pressure to see if it is low. it may be pump but may be something else. try disconnecting fan belt/alternator to seeif noise disappears.

I took it apart. It was the water pump. Replaced water pump and timing belt. Started right up, runs smooth.
