Ford Windstars have only one serpentine belt driving the accessories (eg pwr steering, alternator, A/C, etc.) Absence of the belt causes no power-assist for steering, resulting in a hard-to-steer vehicle, and the battery light you mentioned.
Purchase another belt, ensure all pulleys are in good condition and especially: Make sure the belt tensioner is still "in-plane" with the other pulleys. When tensioners wear out at their pivot point, the serpentine belt tends to ride on the outer edge of the pulley, eventually tearing the bands one by one. You'll be left stranded again.
Have your mechanic determine any side-to-side play on the tensioner, as well as determine if the other pulleys are in good shape and replace as necessary. Worn components will only tear the replacement new belt to shreds if left unchecked.
