2003 Ford Ranger trans surge and OD light flashes

2003 Ford Ranger with auto transmission in D after a slow start (5-10mph)the transmission will take time to engage to the next gear, as the engine rpm increases then truck surges forward as the gears shift then OD light starts flashing. the trans seems to work fine at faster take off. Truck has clear trans fluid, does not look dirty and does not smell burnt.
