Gas Gauge Problem

I just bought a 95 VW Cabrio and it seems to have an electrical short with the gas gauge that only starts happening once the gas level is near 1/2 tank or below and it will go up and down based on me using the gas pedal. Should I pull the dash and check the connection or is this something else?

The problem is likely in the tank, not the dash. You likely have a bad sending unit in the tank.
