What did i break when i tried to tow my car and how much to fix it?

I had a friend come tow me out of an icy patch and apparently he tied the rope to the axle(?) Now there is a black tarry substance leaking out and the car goes thump thump when i drive. What happened and how much will it cost to fix??

Front Right side. And iam sure of nothing considering i dont even know what an axle or a cv joint is. the guy who did it said something about a "boot"
