About 50 miles into a 70 mile trip this morning my 2002 mazda tribute began acting very strange. I have suspected that a may have a cylinder out because ive had the problem with the coils before but never to this extent. It struggles maintaining speed on hills even when set on cruise. It runs very high rpms when accelerating 5-6k and this morning it very suddenly would not accelerate above 45 mph. Occasionally it would regain its acceleration (it would also make a whistle while accelerating similar to a turbo sound) (usually on a downhill) I managed to get to my destination but as I did it broke down. The engine shut down and it decelerated to a stop with no steering control. I turned the car off and restarted it and was able to get into a parking lot where the same thing happened. I checked the fluids and the levels of oil and transmission fluid look fine. What could be happening and is there anything I can do to get it running so I can get home?

It sounds like you have a clogged catalytic converter, the clue was the whistle sounds when trying to accelerate. Here is a guide to help you confirm the issue, with images to help you as well below.

Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.
