I can not shift unless I use the shift lock release steps in the manual. Then once I have started the car it runs great. What could be causing this?

It has no problem automatically shifting while driving. While in park I can not completely compress the release button on the lever.

The shift lock out is a safety feature designed so that children can't pull the car into gear or neutral with possible catastrophic outcome. There is a solenoid connected to the brake light switch that releases the lock out, possibly the solenoid is out of adjustment or faulty, a faulty brake light switch can also cause this, get this checked out first.
