Just to clear this up. The entire unit (both 5R44 and 55E) takes 10 quarts when you are rebuilding the unit and have to completely fill it.
However, if you are just dropping the pan and changing the filter then it will normally take about half of the total capacity. You will need to reinstall the pan and then put about 3 quarts in to fill the pan and then you start the engine and let it warm up. Then check the level and add one quart. Then you need to run it through the gears and check the level again. More than likely you will end up being around 5 quarts, but each level is going to be different as you never know how much fluid remains in the converter and if the transmission was low to start.
