The transmission drives the transfer case. If you're referring to disconnecting either drive shaft, that won't stop the transfer case from turning.

The biggest reason for transfer case problems on some models is mismatched tire sizes. Even identical pairs of tires bought a few weeks apart can have different circumferences. This has been a real big problem on the all-time 4wd Astro Van because they don't have a viscous fluid coupling on one drive shaft to let it turn at a different speed when cornering. I'm not sure if yours has that viscous coupling. My guess is it does because I haven't heard stories of a high failure rate on your model.

Hi if you didn't get this problem fix by now. If your transfer case is knocking its cause of your rear output shaft its stripped on the end of it. Also if your chain is stretched to much it will cause it to slip and sound like a blocking sound the parts are cheap but not at the dealer.
