This is a weird one which has confused both VW dealers and the local "expert" shop here in Berlin, so you may be my last hope!
For the past three years or so, at very irregular intervals (sometimes every day, sometimes weekly, sometimes not for several months), when I'm driving along, I get a sudden "braking" sensation even if I'm accelerating normally or have my foot off the accelerator or brake. The effect is almost as though I'm skidding on wet leaves - even though the conditions are dry - and it seems that the ABS kicks in. It happens at all speeds, meaning on motorways I'm having to drive very cautiously - and seemingly totally at random. The noise which is produced in these situations appears to come from the passenger side (left-hand drive!) Under the bonnet or further down, closer to the wheel.
When this happens, most of the time the yellow/orange warning light comes on. Either intermittently or remaining on for the duration of the journey. This is the light which is a triangle with an exclamation mark inside it and a near-full circle with an arrow at the end - also ESP/ASR.
What is happening here? When it happens, it's a real shock and obviously could provide some dange, although the vahicle remains pretty stable for the short duration of the "block".

Hey JakeW,

I have seen where the frame member/suspension arm mounts are cracked allowing the fame to move causing the sensation you described, can you for "rust colored dust" on and round the fame/suspension mounts please? This would be an indication of a crack.

Let me know what you find

Best, Ken

Dear Ken,

Many many thanks for this answer - and so quickly. It sounds as plausible a solution as I've heard thus far (and I've heard a bag of them) so I'll go to the garage armed with this new knowledge and then let you know how it goes.

Really appreciate your response.

All the best
Jake

Hi Ken,

No, not as yet. I'm taking the car in next week.
Will definitely keep you posted, though.

Many thanks again

Dear Ken,

I took the car to the garage last week and they re-checked everything against what you said. They couldn't find anything. I think they were so non-plussed thatthey didn't even charge for the work.
They've told me to go to the VW dealership because their diagnostic systems are wider-reaching. But that's going to be well over $1500. ANd it would be the third time the diagnostics would have been checked.
To be honest, I'm even thinking of getting rid of it and getting another car, rather than pour good money after bad.

Many thanks again for your suggestions.

All the best
Jake
