This sounds like you have an input shaft speed sensor that has failed, here is a video of one being replaced.

Here is the location for your car

Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

Cheers

The air conditioner works but the car stalls almost immediately when I turn on the air conditioner. I am guessing about the wheel drive type above by the way, I have no idea. This just started this season, previously had no problems at all. I am thinking of getting a tune up and timing belt, do you think that would help?

Hi pattit,

Thank you for the donation.

A tuneup might not help. I would suggest getting the throttle body and Idle Air Control cleaned.

I just bought my car about a month ago and it was running really well until I noticed when starting the car and going from park to reverse the revs can jump up a little, then from reverse to drive it does it again and the car almost stalls. It seems to be ok if I leave it a few seconds between gears, but it doesn't feel right. Has just had a service with an oil change and filters, cambelt is due in the next 10-20,000 ks.

Hi, sorry, Im not that knowledgable about cars, Im assuming you mean running a diagnostic test or something like that. No lights come on, it sort of only does it intermittently. Would you recommend taking it to somewhere that can hook it up and check for codes?

Yes, that is what I meant. Strat by getting the codes read and you can get them read free at most parts stores if you are located in the US.

Come back with the results and do not change anything first as the people doing these for you only knows how to read codes and can't really diagnose the problem for you.

In the meantime, check the transmission fluid level and condition. Good transmission fluids should not look dark or brownish.

Hi vedovaaw,

Erratic idling are usually due to the Idle Solenoid Control (ISC) valve, commonly known as the Idle Air Control Valve ( IAC).

Get the IAC and throttle body cleaned and retest. Is the Check Engine Lamp indicating?

You may have a fuel pressure problem, or a TPI sensor acting up, best to start with a scan to check for any unresolved fault codes, this is always the best place to start a diagnosis for this type of problem.

My car dies sometimes when I slow down at an intersection or a stop light and put my foot on the brake. It also dies sometimes when I press the gas too hard or sometimes even at a normal pace. When I turn the ket after this as occured, there is no problem getting the car to start again. I have also noticed that sometimes when I allow the car to trottle, the front shakes and it sometimes dies (not often). When I nuetral it and floor the gas pedal the car resist as if to suggest that it might die. I have took it to several mechanic explaining the issue and they keep cleaning the trottle body area but the problem contiues to occur. I would greatly appreciate if you could tell me what is wrong with the car.

Hi rshaw,

Since the throttle body is not the source, I would suggest checking the following.

1. Valve clearances if they are not the hydraulic type.

2. The map sensor.

3. The speed sensor.

Usually the throttle body needs to be cleaned and the inlet as well. The bucket filter on the high pressure fuel pump has to be replaced as well. They are known to get trouble with the fuel pumps(HP) but I think the best way is to get it to a Mitsi dealer as the technicians will know what and where to look for compared to other non mitsi technicians.
There is a special product sold by MMC to slean the inlet manifold and it's called "schuma"
Let me know how you get on.
