The pumps, this being the second replacement, were changed at a garage and I guess they were returned for core. The noise was present at idle, but increased with rpm and steering movement. I suspect the rack and pinion due to the new leak, static and press., that has developed as soon as the second replacement pump was installed. My wife drove the car straight from being fixed about 150 miles and the next morning there was a l good size puddle under the car and no fluid in the resevoir.

Did original pump make noise? your feeling of rack makes since pump will make whine/howl if operating at max pressure. so if rack is leaking and maybe binding would make noise.
