How much play? Usually 1- 2 inches is acceptable. If the vehicle is equiped with speed sensitive steering you will have more "play" at idle to low speeds, then it "tightens up" the faster you go. A repair manual will give you specification for acceptable tolerence of play as well as how to adjust the stering box ( if it can be adjusted ) to eliminate excessive play.
