Hello there!

I've recently gotten into working on my car and it interests me a lot. Now I know saturn was a pretty cheap brand and that's why it's no longer around lol! I know, however, their engines are built pretty simply and I've gotten into working on it a bit (received it for free from my sister and fixed problems). I'd love some advise on how to go about learning how to work on cars more. No shops will respond with people to help or anything. Thank you!

Well, one thing that's not a huge deal but might become one eventually is this crazy idling for a couple seconds at startup. My friend said it could possibly be a gasket or piston rings?

If you can, I would remove the throttle body and clean it with some throttle body cleaner and see if that helps. To check for vacuum leaks you can spray around the intake manifold with throttle body cleaner and see if the idle changes.

Just to add to this one I worked for saturn for over 16yrs and feel your wrong on calling it cheap crap brand. There are a lot things that went into its failure. I own a 1999 saturn sl2 with 267,000 miles on it I love the car. As far as your idle issue that year single cam engine also 2000-2002 had issues with a wrinkled intake manifold gasket at the number one intake port. That would be by your power steering pump. At idle spray some carb spray around that area of the intake gasket. If the engine stumbles or dies its leaking and needs to be replaced. Also the coolant temp sensors I have seen cause idle issues on those engines. Thats a good engine when there cared for my favorite model is the S model easy to work on and fix and trouble shoot.

Oh I know if they're well taken care of they can last ages. I had a problem with the ECTS when I first got it, replaced that and all was well. I will have to check that gasket you're talking about thank you.
