Drove home and never heard anything until I pulled into the driveway. Engine was clattering from top end, and when I took off the oil cap, it had lots of blowback. It still runs good and it is not getting hot. I took the valve cover off. Is it possible to fix without pulling the head? Please help! Give me all scenarios of what it could be, I am pretty mechanically inclined.

Did you check the oil level?

You need to start with a oil pressure test as it needs to be verified that oil can get to the top of the motor.

Beyond that, it may be failed lifters for the noise but the blow by is from worn piston rings
