what is the cause of this? and how can i fix it?

i have a 2000 mitsubishi verada kh xi with an automatic transmision, and its having problems with the gearbox. it seems like the gear is stuck at times, and if it does change, it will change suddenly with a thump. the neutral and drive indicators also start flashing and alternatively between the two.
