Idle control system malfunction. Could be the IAC, throttle position sensor, MAF, O2 sensor(s), fuel pump, pressure regulator, or an injector. Check fuel pressure when the problem occurs. Check spark when the problem occurs.

Easiest way is to pull the wire, then the plug, insert the plug back into the boot. Hold the threads against the engine and have someone crank the engine. This also tests the plugs at the same time. Safest is to pull the plug wire, insert a Phillips screwdriver into the boot, hold it near the block (about 1/8-1/4 inch) from the block or a good ground. Have someone crank the engine and watch the spark. It needs to be a crisp arcing sound and a good, bright spark.
