I started up my truck and its rocking and then the check engine light came on and started flashing. the mechanic that I know lives about 8 miles from me is it safe to drive there? he said it sounds like and O2 censor.

It doesn't sound like a o2 sensor with the check engine light flashing that mean you have a miss fire bad enough to damage the cat.Without knowing whats wrong I wouldn't drive it too far.You have valves in the head issues common on those.
