It matters what the noise sounds like and where it is coming from. A bad engine will usually make a knocking sound (internal). That usually indicates a bad rod, cam, or main bearing.

Ok one mechanic told me it was a bad rod and another told me it was the engine sayin if I drove the car the rods would bust if I drove the car! But the noise is coming from the top where the rods are so I believe the first mechanic

So if its a bad rod can I just buy the rods or do I need to replace the whole engine?

If it is a rod bearing, they can be replaced. However, chances are the crankshaft will need replaced or machined.
