When I start the car in the morning when the engine cold it doesn't want to start. It makes noise to start but it can't hold it, I have to hold my foot on the accelerator to warm it up for it to start okay. I don't know why it is doing it and also it. What controls the idle when cold?

Hello my name is Dave.

Have you checked for any codes in the computer? If you have a check engine light on then you definitely have codes in the computer but if the light isn't on there still could be stored codes. We will want to start there as that will give us the best information as to the issue. Here is a link to our tutorial on retrieving your codes should you have any:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

If you don't have any codes one possibility is a faulty coolant temperature sensor not reading the right temperature and not letting the computer know that the engine is cold therefore needing more fuel than when it is at operating temperature. This usually will cause a trouble code but I have seen instances where it didn't, probably one of the more common failures to not trigger a check engine light. If you find you don't have any codes I would recommend scanning the computer and getting live data and see what the engine temperature the sensor is telling the computer. If you don't have access to a scanner Amazon has a very affordable one that will give you live data, here is a link to that scanner:

If you can go through these and update us on what you find it will be a lot easier for us to help you track down the issue. We look forward to hearing back from you and thank you for using 2CarPros!

Good morning,

There is an idle air control valve that controls the idle speed. It is on the bottom of the throttle body. The ECM controls it to run at a specific RPM.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/stall-at-idle

I would start by cleaning the throttle body of all carbon buildup. That carbon clogs passages and will not allow the engine to idle. I attached a guide below for you to follow.

I would start there. Let us know the results so we can continue.
