When it turns normally one way you know the pump is working. Worn seals in the spool valve in the rack and pinion assembly is real common on GMs. They had a service bulletin on the repair but it was just designed to get the car out of the warranty period. After that the permanent fix was your responsibility. It's those types of business practices that makes GM such a profitable company. Very soon it will turn hard both ways. The problem will get better when the power steering fluid warms up.
