If you have a check engine light have a local auto parts supplier scan the vehicle for codes and give them to me.
From your description it sounds like a vacuum leak or possibly a misfire. Either one should trigger the check engine light to come on.
You might also check the throttle body for what is called coking. Coking is build up around the throttle plate in the throttle body. Cleaning off these parts will only correct the poor idle only that is if this is the issue.
