when should i replace the timing belt or timing chain on a 1999 gmc sierra 8 cylinder 5.3 liter engine?

How often do you change you oil? If you keep up a good maintenance schedule, I would honestly leave it alone. It has a chain and it will last a very long time. You don't have a zero clearance engine so even if it broke you would have no issues. I would only change it if you have some chain noise.
