What further problems can result from the subframe rusting out? Tierods, tires, rack and pinion? Master brake cylinder, transmission trouble? HELP!

The sub-frame is a structural part of the vehicle and any loss in strength can result in serious problems.

That recall is for the rear axle. It will let the rear wheels fold under the van like wheels folding up into an airplane wing. If this happens at highway speed, it could end up in a rollover after loss of steering control. They aren't replacing the axle. They just install a patch that holds it together if it breaks. They will also buy the vehicle back in some cases because there is a backlog on those patches. A local dealer has a parking lot full of them. The dollars they offer don't cover the vehicle's value, and it's possible those dollars only are good toward a new vehicle but I don't know that for a fact.
