First, it could be a couple things. If I had to guess, I would say the tumbler, the part the key fits into. Try spraying a lubericant into the thmbler, then run the key in and out several times. Try this a few times to see if it loostens things. Some people use WD40 and it works, but they do make a lubericant made just for tumblers.
Try this before replacing the tumbler. I can't recall if a 1996 had a coded key. If it does, it's a dealer job because the computer will need to be adjusted to accept the new code from a new key. Not cheap to do.
