Ignition cylinder

The ignition cylinder broke in my 99 ranger, 3.0, v6. In the cylinder housing, there is a green clip, then a metal piece and then the gear. What is the green piece and what is it for? Will the steering wheel lock up if it is not in place?

The green piece is the retainer that holds the gear and washer in the cylinder housing. The metal washer is part of what holds the cylinder in to keep the car from being stolen so easily. These items should be reinstalled. When changing the key cylinder you should not have had to remove these items unless something broke in the rod or gear area.

89integrals, thanks for your reply. I was able to get everything back in. Unfortunately I had to remove those pieces because of where the cylinder broke, I wasn't able to remove the broken piece without removing them. Thanks again for the reply, much appreciated.
