My mom's 99 Chevy Suburban was making loud grinding noises coming from the differential area. She took it to the shop and are giving her a price area of $800-$1800 depending on parts being replaced with just a couple hours labor to a full replacement of the differential. Does this seem accurate? This is a local mechanic, and not a dealership.

Yes rear end repair isnt cheap and can get expensive depending on whats wrong. So 800 and up is very possible if he removes the rear end cover he should be able to give you better estimate.
