odometer is broke

My 1999 Silverado 2500 odometer and gear selector light dosent come on anymore. It use to be intermittent and now wont come on at all.... Any ideas? I use to be able to push the reset button several times and it would come up, but now wont even do that...

It seems that the system upgrade might have deleted a large portion of the original part of this question, unfortunately.
