An OBDII reader or scanner should be used to erase the codes and reset the PCM

disconnecting the battery would erase the codes too and all the PCM memory as you may or may NOT end up with a rough idle and stalling until drive cycle is completed

Computer problem
1999 Buick Century 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

The "Service Engine Soon" turned on in my 99 Buick Century. I went to my usual mechanic and he checked the system with the code reader and told me it the same problem I had 2 years ago--the gas cap was loose. He suggested Ii buy a new one. He then cleared the code and the light was not on anymore.

I bought a new gas cap from the dealership and it fit fine. Now when I start my car, the SES light will turn off immediately, while all the other lights stay on a few seconds before turning off. If I turn the car on without starting it, all the lights come on and while the other lights will turn off after a few seconds, the SES light stays on. Is this all normal?

Engine Performance problem
1999 Buick Century Automatic

The check engine soon light came on this afternoon on my way to work. I'm trying to find out if I can still drive my car around until I am able to take it to a shop to get the code read. Will this damage my vehicle if I drive it until I can get to the mechanic?

Take it to Autozone and get read for free and comeback and give us the code/s. You have an engine management system problem

1999 buick century ck eng. Light came on-auto zone said it showed running lean, egr, and o2 sensor problems. Advised me to run inj. Cleaner and drive about 50 miles to take care of it. Did that-next day it ran like a wagon sometimes-no power on hills and has a slight burn rubber smell when I shut it off. Took to a repair shop-they say it is a misfire on 4 & 5, EGR, and o2 sensor. Could it be all these issues or is it possiblly the cat converter? Can't afford to take it to umpteen shops. Also, the CEL started flashing -was told I could drive it but it would be rough. Any ideas where I should really take it? I know its high mileage but can't replace it since I am currently laid off. Thanks for any suggestions.

The flashing SES light would indicate a convertor problem.

If you can remove convertor (bolted on) look down convertor, if you see signs of overheating, melted material, chunks of material, the convertor is bad.

You must find cause, usually a rich fuel mixture, before replacing convertor.

Engine Mechanical problem
1999 Buick Century 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

We have changed the o2 sensors and the egr valve and a couple other things and the light will not go off, this is very frusterating. The codes it is throwing are the p0449 and the p1404 I would like to know where these things are located on my car so I can check them, Thanks

The codes you are talking about could have been set due to teh gas cap not being tightened up. Once the light is set to go offit will have to be closed by the use of a scan tool. IF the problem is fixed it shold go off after about 50 some starts. The one code may be your egr valve is stuck open. You might be able to fix that by taking the egr valve off and cleaning it and then reinstalling it. If not then it will need to be replaced. Sometimes it's better to take it to a pro so you actually save money instead of buying parts and throwing them at it.

Engine Cooling problem
1999 Buick Century 157000 miles

My car has been shaking when I drive 50 mph. At times the low coolant light goes off. My mechanic said it's just a bad sensor. The check engine light goes on too. The mechanic says the car may be misfiring. Now the car is overheating. We just had the radiator repaired. What do you suggest is the problem & how much would you anticipate such repairs to cost?

First, has your mechanic even checked anything or assuming the problems? If the check engine light is on, then there is a code stored in the computer that will identify where the problem is coming from. If it is a misfire, it needs to be fixed before it causes other problems.

As far as the overheating, I would start with the thermostat to make sure it isn't sticking shut. Also, let me know if the car overheats at highway speeds or only intown driving.

It's on the back of the intake manifold, toward the driver's side of center. Here's a diagram of a Chevy; yours should be the same: http://autorepair.about.com/library/images/bl456lib.htm
You'll need to unbolt it from the manifold and the exhaust riser. Equally or more likely to be clogged than the valve itself is its port in the manifold, which sometimes must be removed to clean effectively.
