After installing my new water pump I dont know how to fully tighten the water pump pulley to to water pump? Help? The pulley on the new water pump rotate in the same direction as the belt. Do I need to press the brake and push emergency brake? The pulley is loose and chatters and squeals. Any help is appreciated. Thanks greasy mike.

The best thing you can do is remove the belt.

Use the belt like a jar opener around the pulley.

You might even double it back on itself, and insert something like a socket, or piece of wood, in the "bite" (loop formed in the belt) so that you will have something to keep it tensioned and also to hang onto while you tighten bolts.

Re-install the belt and you're set!

Your turn

THank YOU! CJ MEDEVEC I do appreciate it! By the way is there an improper way to install the pump? I read elswhere that I have to align the pump to to timing belt? Confused. I worked on it in 40 degree weather for two days the squeel is still there and hoping once I tighten the pulley it will resolve this. Thanks.

You're killing me!

I'm a Jeep guy, I will look in Mitchell one and see if I can find a diagram.

No promises, but I will go look!

This new stuff is a trip, I'm pretty slow, maybe give me 30 min?

You sorta had me going crazy on that one

Your engine size is a 3.0

Your water pump is driven off of the serpentine belt up front, is that correct?

The water pump is not timed

The only way the water pump might even play into being timed is if it were being driven by a "timing belt". So far it looks like your vehicle has a timing chain. Basically the water pump is just a freewheeling accessory.

I did find you a diagram, it looks as though one of your bolts needs sealant on it. Look at the diagram and you will see which one. If you will, verify this is the way your water pump looks.

Like I said before Jeeps are my thing, I don't work on cars very often except for my family and friends. I did not mean to maybe mislead you, I knew the answer to your original question, that's why answered you!

I really try to help out, but I also try not to get in over my head!

You really need to get it Jeep you don't know what you're missing!

Let me know if I might try to get you anything else!

Note: sealant only goes on that one bolt, the rest get lightly oiled!

CAN YOU SEND ME A PIC? POINT AT THE PULLEY, NOT A CLOSE UP, SO I CAN COMPARE WHERE IT IS, WITH THE OTHERS.......CAN YOU TURN THIS PULLEY EZily, WITH THE BELT REMOVED?....IF SORTA DON'T WANT TO, COULD THIS BE THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY?

AS FAR AS MITCHELL I, IT'S SORTA GEARED TOWARD MECHANICS (I'M NOT!) IT IS FULL OF INFO FOR MANY CARS...IT'S ONLY ON-LINE (I THINK)

WE SORTA GET TO USE IT AS A "SPIFF" FOR BEING PART OF 2CARFELLERSI THINK I HEARD ITS LIKE $1200.00 OR SO A YEAR. OUR PASSWORDS CHANGE FROM TIME TO TIME......THE ONLY REASON I TRY TO USE IT, IS TO AID SOMEONE THAT I KNOW LITTLE ABOUT THEIR CAR, I DON'T HAVE PAPER MANUALS FOR EVERYTHING---JUST MY STUFF! IMMA PLUMBER...THAT KNOWS JEEP CJs VERY WELL (ALMOST INTIMATELY), AND BASIC SYSTEMS FOUND ON MOST CARS---I DO BETTER ON THINGS PRIOR TO THE '90s---INVESTIGATE THE CJ7 AND CJ5 FORUMS HERE-FOR THE LAST 2 YEARS

THIS IS THE LINK TO IT, .com

YOU MIGHT BENEFIT MORE FROM A FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL, CHILTON, OR HAYNES....SPECIFICALLY ABOUT THE VEHICLES YOU OWN....THAT'S BEEN MY THING SINCE 1981---MUCH EZier TO UNDERSTAND THEM!
